The Junior Steenkamp Family
It is our responsibility to care
We are the mohair specialists.
We are also a family.
Our company is built on a solid foundation of 3 simple principles:
Family Values
Integrity
Humility
These 3 principles are our driving force both in and out of the factory. Included in this is an extremely high standard of quality and an aspiration to always work towards the greater good, for the mohair industry and for every single person and animal involved.

Our Story
The saying ‘Do not despise the day of small beginnings’ is so true of our family-owned business, which began in 1996.
As with most things in life, it took time, effort and a lot of patience to build this established business.
Together with his sons Jannie and Paul, Junior Steenkamp – who boasts over 40 years of experience in the industry – run JS Mohair (Junior Steenkamp CC) with great care.
As a family, we are truly humbled by the immense progress that our business has made over the last 20-plus years, to the point where we can proudly call ourselves one of the leading mohair sorters in the world.
Our Role in the Mohair Industry
Mohair is known by many names, one of which is the diamond fibre. And if mohair – lustrous and strong – is the diamond, we are the diamond cutters.
We are the mohair specialists – positioned in the centre of the mohair industry and putting all our heart into our work.
In the bigger picture, the farmer who shears his Angora goats twice a year to produce raw, greasy mohair is the diamond miner, providing us with rough diamonds, filled with potential. We then sort and class the luxurious material that is so valuable before transporting it to the buyers. The buyers of this diamond fibre do the equivalent of setting it into shimmering jewellery items such as rings by washing, combing, processing, dyeing and blending the mohair to create lavish clothing garments and more.

The Mohair Process –
in Mohair terms
We add value to the raw mohair – after it is sheared from the goat’s back and before it can be used to create garments. How do we do this?
Mohair is sheared by the farmer and then delivered either to auction brokers or straight to us. If it goes to the auction, it is bought by mohair buyers, most of whom are our clients, too.
But irrespective of whether mohair is bought on the auction or delivered directly to us by the farmers, our task is to sort the raw mohair into more valuable lines according to multiple crucial factors, such as microns and length. This labour-intensive process adds immense value to the mohair.
We then press it into bales, and it is ready for the processing and manufacturing of the mohair products.
Mohair sorting is an integral part of the process mohair has to go through before it can be used in this way to create items such as carpeting or high-end branded suits and clothing.
We Specialise in Value -
Adding Mohair Sorting
The process of sorting mohair is one that takes expert eyes and skills, borne of true experience and knowledge. We take pride is supplying this from the centre of the world’s mohair industry in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
As mohair specialists, we are passionate about using our expertise in every possible way to serve the mohair industry. As such, over and above our core business offering of value-adding mohair sorting, we offer the logistics (transporting and packaging) of mohair and wool bales, we can buy mohair directly from farmers, and we can even do value assessments of mohair for insurance purposes.
