Mohair goes by many names – the noble fibre, the luxury fibre, the white gold of the Eastern Cape, and of course, the diamond fibre
Mohair shares many characteristics with this precious stone, over and above its own unique characteristics. Qualities you can expect from mohair are:
LUSTRE
You can tell a diamond apart from cubic zirconium from its unmistakable sparkle. The natural sheen of mohair – once washed, cleaned and sorted – is what sets it apart from other wools and natural fibres.
Durability and Strength
Just like the nearly indestructible diamond, mohair is extremely durable – able to withstand twisting and more – and boasts tensile strength greater than steel.
Resilience and Elasticity
Mohair is famous for its anti-creasing, anti-pilling, anti-matting and anti-crushing properties, as well as for its resistance to soiling (from dust or dirt), wrinkling, stretching and sagging.
Non-Flammability
This diamond fibre is almost completely non-flammable in that once the mohair is taken away from the flame, any burning will stop immediately.
Light-Weight Breathability
Unlike man-made fibres, mohair ‘breathes’, allowing it to absorb and release moisture, as well as to insulate heat. This means that despite being lightweight, mohair keeps its wearer warm and comfortable.
As with a diamond in the rough, raw and greasy mohair does not seem to have any lustre or such desirable qualities. But the cleaning, sorting and processing – or the diamond cutting and polishing – adds immense value to the fibre, transforming it to what can proudly be called
